Even though we’ve just finished getting the full scoop on the first four parts of the “Worlds Collide” crossover event, IGN has an exclusive look at the variant covers for Part 6 (Sonic the Hedgehog #249) and Part 7 (Mega Man #26).

This time around, Archie is playing off the games’ video-game roots with full-on 16-bit sprite-based covers. Part 6 places us in Cloud Man’s stage from Mega Man 7 where we see Sonic launching a devastating kick toward Bass. In the background, Tails battles Guts Man G from his biplane. Oh, and Proto Man is in the background, looking as cool as usual. Meanwhile in Part 7, Mega Man and Rush take on Metal Sonic at the Stardust Speedway Zone while Dr. Eggman creates destruction in the background. Could these mash-ups be a hint at impending confrontations?

Along with the covers, we have street dates for these two issues: May 29 and June 12 respectively. Head to IGN for a full look at these covers!

Oh wow. That… That is just awesome! I Wonder if this is some kind of hint as to what’s in the comic. It would be pretty awesome to see Mega Man battle metal sonic.

Well, the solicits for the first four parts imply that Mega Man and Sonic are causing problems in each other’s worlds, but that they may not be themselves. This makes me think doppelgangers will be the real culprits… Both Metal and Bass kind of fit those bills.

I can agree with them mistaking Metal Sonic for the real Sonic since they look so much alike, but I don’t see how they could confuse Mega Man and Bass with each other. The two of them have completely different colors and designs. I’m guessing that maybe Wily could be using a Copy Robot or Mega Man? from Mega Man Powered Up. Just a guess.

Agreed, but we don’t know the context. I imagine a scenario going like this…

Bass terrorizes Mobius. The Sonic denizens relay back to Sonic that “a robot with an arm cannon and big feet” is causing trouble. (Bass doesn’t really have that iconic of a color-scheme compared to, say, Mega Man or Proto Man, so I don’t see them explicitly saying a “black-and-gold robot” or anything.)

So then when Sonic later stumbles upon Mega Man—a robot with an arm cannon and big feet—he can only assume it’s the same robot causing terror in his home world.

I think that’s plausible enough. Similarly, the Mega Man denizens could have relayed back to him that a “blue hedgehog robot with superhuman speed is blowing stuff up,” and Mega Man would assume the same of Sonic.

Sure, Sonic is not a robot and doesn’t LOOK robotic… but considering anthropomorphic animals that run at the speed of sound isn’t scientifically logical in the world of Mega Man, I could see Mega Man making the conclusion that Sonic must be a new type of robot.

I just think it’s too much of a coincidence that the first four issues deal with Sonic and Mega Man fighting each other because doppelgangers attacked their home worlds, and then the first covers we see of the next four issues shows Sonic VS. Bass and Mega Man VS. Metal Sonic. It makes sense that after their misunderstanding, the next four parts would deal with them going after the look-alikes.

(That and Copy Mega Man is just… boring.)

(I should also mention that Bass was created with the purpose of matching Mega Man’s abilities, hence why he can also adapt weapons and has a canine companion that he can merge with. Despite having a more detailed appearance, he is intended to serve as Mega Man’s “evil alternate.”)

I can agree with that. It sounds like something that could or maybe will happen. Also I think Copy Mega Man has some potential to be an interesting character. Just have him be the Copy Robot of anyone he wishes to be so he can actually become them. He could know the secrets they keep from everyone else. Sorta just picture an evil Axl-like character. Of that just my opinion.
